Gaming pc out of Dell computer..”Project”?

Question by cleveland129: Gaming computer out of Dell computer..”Project”?
I would like to know if it is achievable to build a gaming computer out of a
Dell desktop Optiplex gx260 model “this is the huge model,not the slim model”?

I know the pc is kinda old,but I know it would be less complicated to rebuild or buy a new pc.But i like the challenge.

Here are my specs:
P.four 3.06ghz.533 chip
2gb ram “maxed out”
100gb tough drive
Agp video card needed…

Can you tell me what I would want to install to run new games like
Call of duty four?

What kind of AGP video card do you recommend? and would that
P4 chip be enough?? its only a single core..no dual?

is this feasible? Thanks.

That is not enough.Pentium 4 cant run COD four and AGpgraphic cards are not the most current and they are slow.

This is certainly not feasible.

Get a Dual core processor

I run bf2142 and call of duty 4 on a p4, 3 ghz intel chip. be sure you have a cable connection if you plan to play online. this machine will soon be totally obsolete however so I wouldn’t spend much money upgrading. big model and slim model pretty much have same hardware so it doesn’t really matter save for cooling maybe.

an nvidia graphics card is what I’d buy. find out what specs call for on game and buy to those specs. I work in a Dell shop supporting almost 5000 Dell computers and laptops, we have had some 260′s used for advanced programs like AutoCAD. They performed ok but not as good as those new Precisions in that lab.

As far as chips go, most games, even new ones, aren’t programmed to use more than one chip. dual core or quad core, game will run on one chip. advantage of multi-core is that other programs can run off another core while game can use one core by itself.
Best bet is to get you an upgraded computer with newer motherboard.

In my opinion I would keep the Dell as stock for a back up pc or sell and would get or build a gaming computer you don’t want a board that is set up for AGP you will want PCIe as the new video cards are now. Your system is old news sorry but that’s the truth

Well the first issue – the OEM power supply is going to be a 200W / +12v@10A or a 250W / +12v@14A so that is going to have to be replaced.

My fave PSU calc http://extreme.outervision.com/psucalculatorlite.jsp says
P4 519 / 2 x ddr2 / 1 x sata / 1 x dvdrw / front panel / 3 x fan / HD3850 = 245W

so even a dell 300W would be pushing it at this point (age considering)

I would use this

PC Power & Cooling Silencer S41D2 410W
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817703014
$ 60 w/ free shipping

for AGP the best on the market is this

HIS Radeon HD 3850 512MB/256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X IceQ 3 Turbo
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814161226
$ 203

or a non OC model that is easier on the wallet

SAPPHIRE 100228L Radeon HD 3850 512MB 256-bit GDDR3 AGP 4X/8X
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814102730
$ 130

Either one will play COD4 just fine, but it is not a new game. It will not handle COD5 and a lot of the newer games that are out nowadays, or even some of the non-optimized releases like GRAW.

So if you are a budget gamer, and want to play older, legacy games this will do the job for $ 200 (the good PSU & sapphire 3850) and you can start saving up for your new rig which will be a lot more coin (my GTX260 cost $ 250 alone, a core7 is $ 220 and a good mobo is $ 200 to $ 300… you get my point)

cheers
