What is a “safe” quantity of rounds per pistol to fire at the shooting range? Interchangeable barrel (Sig Saeur)?

Question by Genaro M: What is a “secure” number of rounds per pistol to fire at the shooting range? Interchangeable barrel (Sig Saeur)?
I have a Sig Saeur P239 with interchangeable .357 and 40 cal barrels. I went through a box (50) rounds with the .357 plus 21 other rounds that had been currently in the magazines, for a total of 71 rounds within 20 or so minutes. I repeated this with the 40 caliber following changing the barrles. After speaking to my buddy who is much more knowledgeable than I in the topic, he advised it was unsafe to shoot too numerous rounds in a short period as the barrel heats up and/or can cause other damage. Any suggestions on this ??

Unless the barrel is glowing orange, it isnt getting that hot. Its not like you are shooting the factor at three rounds per second… I wouldnt worry about what your buddy said.

maybee if it was a hi point or some crappy one but those are made to drop 15 shots and do it again and again for hours before failure

plus if you switch from one to another barrel it will work out fine one cools while one works

I’d estimate that either of those barrels will show any noticible wear until they get in to the 30,000 round count… and they will still be going a long time after that.

You can burn out a barrel… but probably not in a handgun…71 in 20 minutes is nothing. We shoot 200 or more in 4 hours during some of the training classes I’ve attended- without changing anything.

Heck…I’ve shot COF’s that required 3 reloads (hi cap mags too) and were all over in less than 2 minutes. If that was certain death to a gun barrel I’d be broke now.

No worries in a handgun. It would be hard to shoot enough rounds fast enough to raise the temperature of the barrel throat enough to cause a significant problem with erosion. At the rate you describe, you have many, many years before wear becomes a problem. In fact, probably never.

Centerfire rifles, especially semi-autos, are a different matter, which is probably the source of your friend’s advice. Pouring a lot of rounds through a barrel very fast can cause serious erosion just in front of the chamber, aka the throat. A burned throat will reduce accuracy, so that’s why people who shoot competitively are concerned about it. People who just shoot casually probably won’t notice a reduction in accuracy until the barrel is really shot, so they tend to be more casual about heating up the barrel.

Best advice is to ignore your ‘more knowledgeable’ friend.

You’ll be unable to hold the pistol way before it’s hot enough to cook off a round. I’ve done several hundred in a couple hours with only enough time to reload mags between strings of fire. Then put it into the holster and went back on duty with no concerns whatsoever.

What your friend is talking about is a misinterpretation of something having to do with precision rifles where as the barrel heats up it can change the zero to a degree noticable for really long range shots. Even there it doesn’t break anything, just changes the zero as the barrel elongates and such.

For a pistol – not a chance. Pistol dimensions are too small for any dimensional differences due to thermal expansion to matter and If you can shoot that thing fast enough to actually break it, team SIG will probably sponsor your for speed shooting events or something.

if that is all ur shooting u have NOTHING to worry about…..unless u are shooting 2k+ rounds in a single sitting u won’t have to worry about anything….and even then it should handle it……

*** btw Sig did a “torture test” and ran 50k rounds through one of these…….and it passed….so i doube u can AFFORD to shoot ur gun enough to mess up anything…
